Hi, I’m Marlies, a surface pattern designer and illustrator from the Netherlands.
My Inspiration
I’ve always been drawn to childhood nostalgia, playful characters, and retro color palettes. From storybooks and vintage toys to travel and everyday life, I collect sparks of inspiration and turn them into designs that feel both familiar and fresh.
Why I Design for Kids
I believe children’s products should do more than look nice, they should spark joy, curiosity, and imagination. My designs are bold yet gentle, whimsical yet timeless, making them perfect for the juvenile and family market. They’re created to appeal to kids while also resonating with parents who want something fun, colorful, and modern.
My Process
Every pattern starts with an idea, it might be a scene from a film, a visit to a toy store or just something I notice on a bike ride , I experiment with brushes and colors, then refine them to create feature (hero) illustrations and seamless repeats. I keep an eye on trends in the kids’ market but always bring in my own retro-inspired twist, so the result feels both on-trend and timeless.
